EU Entry/Exit System (EES)

What Is the EES?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new digital border control system for non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period). It replaces manual passport stamping with electronic registration, improving border security and efficiency.

What Data Is Collected?

  • Biometric data: Facial image (all travellers), Fingerprints (visa-exempt travellers only)
  • Passport details
  • Entry and exit dates and locations
  • Duration of stay

Data retention: 3 years (normal), 5 years (if you overstay)

Exemptions

  • EU/EEA/Swiss citizens
  • Residents with permits
  • Children under 12 (no fingerprints, only facial image)
  • Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, Vatican nationals
  • Countries not participating: Ireland and Cyprus

How It Works

  1. First-time entry: Biometric registration at border kiosks or e-gates.
  2. Subsequent visits: Faster verification using stored data.
  3. No pre-registration or fees required.
  4. Expect longer wait times initially.

Where It Applies

The EES will be used at external borders of 29 European countries, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Who does the EES apply to?

Non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period).

2. Do UK citizens need to use the EES?

Yes. UK citizens are considered third-country nationals and must register via EES.

3. Will I need to register before travelling?

No. Registration happens at the border during your first entry after the system goes live.

4. What happens during registration?

Facial image, fingerprints (if visa-exempt), passport details, and entry/exit information are collected via kiosks or e-gates.

5. Will this replace the ETIAS system?

No. ETIAS is a separate travel authorisation system launching in 2026. EES and ETIAS will work together.

6. Will this make border crossings slower?

Initially, yes. Longer wait times are expected during rollout. Arrive early and follow signage.

7. How long is my data stored?

3 years for standard entries/exits, 5 years if you overstay.

8. Can I check my travel history?

Not directly. Border authorities can access your EES record.

9. What if I’m travelling with children?

Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting but facial image is captured.

10. Does this affect travel to Ireland or Cyprus?

No. Ireland and Cyprus do not use EES.
